Our journey to being the first arena in the world to be Zero Carbon Certified by the International Living Futures Institute began in 2018 with a roof. Originally built in 1962 for the World’s Fair, Climate Pledge Arena’s roof is a national historic landmark. Our team dreamed of holding up that 44 million pound roof, tearing down the existing arena that was attached to it, building a new arena from scratch and then reconnecting it to that landmarked roof.
Shortly after we began design, Amazon and Global Optimism founded The Climate Pledge, a commitment to achieve the goals of the Paris Climate Accords by 2040. Inspired by that vision and motivated by unceasing scientific evidence that we must take immediate action to reverse the course of climate change, our teams set to work to redesign our entire building.
We eliminated fossil fuels from all planned arena operations making us one of the only arenas in the world to be 100% electric. We installed solar panels on site and are offsetting the remainder our energy use through Renewable Energy Credits from Puget Sound Energy and others. And in 2025 we will be powered through a new exclusively renewable energy program stood up by our local utility Seattle City Light. We tracked all the carbon emissions from construction and are offsetting those emissions with credible nature based carbon offsets.
And we’re not stopping there. We track 100% of the carbon emissions from the arena’s operations and offset those emissions. We partner with our public transit agencies to provide free rides to the arena for fans and employees for every arena event. We’ve eliminated all fan facing single use plastics. We’ve applied to be a certified Zero Waste Facility and currently divert more than 90% of our waste away from landfills. We collect rainwater from our roof and turn it into the NHL’s greenest ice. Our partners at Delaware North are sourcing more than 60% of our food ingredients from within 300 miles. And our 1700 square foot living wall with more than 8500 plants is an important visual reminder of the value of our natural environment.

Our Arena design team from Populous, ME Engineers, CAA ICON, and McLennan Design helped make the vision a reality. Mortenson, Hermanson, Unico and McKinstry provided construction expertise to execute the vision. And the Washington State Building Trades alongside LiUNA and our other labor partners built the world’s most sustainable arena during the height of a global pandemic.
It started in Seattle, with a group of passionate hockey fans committed to making the Seattle Kraken’s home ice the most sustainable arena in the world. We are living proof that when the public and private sector work together we can minimize the effects of climate change. And we’re not done. More projects are opening around North America and around the world that will strive to achieve high-impact sustainability efforts. We’ve launched GOAL in partnership with Fenway Sports Group, the Atlanta Hawks, and Jason F. McClennan, the sustainable design advisor for Climate Pledge Arena. GOAL exists to set a new standard for sustainable operations in live sports & entertainment venues. To minimize the effects of climate change, GOAL hosts and supports a community of likeminded venues committed to taking swift and immediate action. This community includes Oak View Group’s portfolio of venues, such as Co-op Live and UBS Arena, both of whom have set ambitious sustainability targets. GOAL is an extension of our partners sustainability teams.
